Scholarly Principles of Gold vs. Silver Nisab
In Islamic jurisprudence, Nisab is the minimum threshold of qualifying wealth a Muslim must possess before Zakat becomes obligatory. During the era of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), the purchasing power of 20 Mithqals of Gold (87.48 grams) was roughly equivalent to 200 Dirhams of Silver (612.36 grams). However, modern industrial supply dynamics have caused the value of gold to diverge dramatically from silver.
1. Which Nisab Should You Use for Cash & Stocks?
- The Silver Standard (Recommended by Fiqh Councils): Leading contemporary scholars and Islamic fiqh assemblies (including the Islamic Fiqh Academy and major jurists across Hanafi and Hanbali traditions) recommend using the Silver Nisab for paper money, bank savings, business stock, and equities. Because silver sets a lower threshold (~$500–$600), it maximizes aid to the poor and needy (Anfa' lil-Fuqara).
- The Gold Standard: Used primarily when an individual’s wealth consists solely of physical gold jewelry or bullion without cash equivalents.
2. The Requirement of Hawl (One Lunar Year)
Possessing wealth above Nisab for a single day does not trigger Zakat. The wealth must remain above the Nisab threshold for a complete lunar year (354 days). Fluctuations during the year do not interrupt the Hawl, provided the opening and closing balances remain above Nisab.
